Prof. Dominic Byarugaba
Professor Dominic B. Byarugaba is the Deputy Executive Director of the African Institute for Capacity Development (AICAD) based in Juja, Kenya starting from July 2014.He is from Uganda and before assuming this position, he worked at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), Faculty of Science, Department of Biology as a Professor of Ethno-botany handling Weed Biology, Evolution and Embryology, Renewable Resources, Forest Ecology and Climax Communities, Poisonous and Medicinal plants of East Africa.He holds a BSc. (Bot/Zoo); MSc. (Environment- Pollination Ecology of canopy forest species); PhD in Ethno-botany with reference to Dioscoreaceae family substitution to on-farm varieties. Professor Dominic Baganda Byarugaba has 19 years experience of University teaching, supervision, research and management. He has supervised BSc reports, MSc and PhD research, published in and co-published in peer referred journals and has 2 book chapters one of which is in the Springer series of the USA – 2012. Prior to university teaching he coordinated research sponsored by WWF/UNESCO/Kew in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park South Western Uganda at Institute of Tropical Forest Conservation (ITFC) a research arm of Mbarara University of Science & Technology.He gained administrative experience as a coordinator of Projects (e.g WWF/UNESCO/Kew and USAID - i@mak) for 8 years and 4 years respectively; Headed Biology Department at MUST for 4 years and served as the chairperson of the Academic Staff Association at MUST, was a member of MUST University Council for 10 years and member of the Education Budget Sector Group for 8 years in Uganda. At AICAD he is the Deputy to the Executive Director and head of programmes that include: Administration and Finance, Training and Extension, Research and Development and Information, Networking and Documentation.
